THE ART OF OBSERVING

Nowadays, Rafael lives outside Tovar. Despite the geographical distance, he still maintains close contact with the ”Grupo de Tovar“.

Rafael is an investigator. He began by studying the human body. After painting humans he went on to still life painting. When he was finished with that, he started painting landscapes. At the moment one of his studies is about circles and squares which he tries to unite into 1 x 1 metre paintings.

Rafael’s work does not feature much detail. With its clearly visible dots of paint it shows impressionistic influence. His paintings are big and amply painted without borders. His paintings seem to blend in with the background.

He is an observer like no other. Instinctively, he transfers his observations onto the canvas with powerful streaks of paint. This in combination with his brilliant use of colour, makes his work an original and abstract sensation.

Rafael says:

”I play with shapes and colours. And, although I quit painting landscapes, there is still a touch of landscape present in my work. Like the wideness of the landscape, my paintings stretch beyond the borders of the canvas. To me, details are not that important. I see them as accessories.“
