DISAPPEARING ACT José Luis is a well know Venezuelan sculptor who at a later stage in his career turned to painting. He earned himself a reputation as a painter. Within the ”Grupo de Tovar“ he is considered a bit special. He has got a mysterious air to him. He is fascinated by change. Change in every element and in every way. Changes that sometimes can happen suddenly and abruptly, but also very subtle changes, that take thousands of years. Most of the time, we fail to notice those changes. Buildings, as independent and energetic objects, play a central role in his current work. Architectural structures, streets and cities without the presence of people. People have mysteriously disappeared from his work. His background as a sculptor is reflected in his way of painting. He makes ample use of the painting knife, applying numerous pasty layers of paint to the canvas to create a plastic effect. He completes his work with brush strokes. His work is figurative with a tendency towards the abstract. José Luis says: “I do not overrate myself as an artist. Nor do I want to draw the attention by provoking. Art should obey the needs of man because it is art. Paintings are not just objects that can be used in conjunction with furniture, flowers and curtains. Art is there to fulfil man’s need to feel human. Art is depicting those good things that will only be missed after they have gone. The inhabitants of big cities are always on the lookout for art as if it were a good thing they lost somehow.“ CURRICULUM Geboren 1958 in Tovar, Estado Mérida, Venezuela.
