CARIBBEAN CLASSIC Typical of Ivan’s early work is the use of earth tones and a surrealistic representation of reality. His current style of painting is realism. A sign of his continuing artistic development. Ivan still being a member of the ”Grupo de Tovar“ may be called a miracle. A few years back he survived a fall from 17 metres high, landing upon a concrete flour. A year later he almost died of acute lead poisoning. Ivan is a classic painter. With patience, layer after layer, he builds up his paintings. Being a perfectionist, he is never sure of whether he has done enough to complete the painting. We think he has… What sets Ivan’s realism apart is his liberal use of colour and playful compositions. This makes his work less formal and more accessible. Ivan says: ”I used to paint hyper realistic. But switching over to the use of mixed techniques, I eventually evolved to pure classic painting. Normally, I do not paint people directly although I try to indicate their presence in the objects I depict. In that way, man has become an object of its own. Painting is a way of silently connecting with ones fellow human beings. The creation of this connection goes beyond matter. Te memory of everyday life, as captured in the painting will remain as long as this bond is respected. My work is a search, an urge, to capture and transform the trivial, the unexpected and expected aspects of everyday life. To make the apparently trivial things look more urgent and necessary. The memory lives on in every aspect and gives meaning to it all. For it is through memory, that new ideas and concepts arise.“ CURRICULUM Geboren 1963 in Mesa de Quintero, Estado Mérida, Venezuela.
