OF MODERN MAN Fidel, member of the ”Grupo de Tovar“ lives and works in the artistic Tovar. Before, Fidel work mainly consisted of still life paintings. From still lives with every day objects, Fidel’s work slowly evolved into working with structures. Man‘s role in his representations has changed over time. In his earlier work, he used to indicate the presence of people by painting household object. In his current work, man is depicted as being part of a mob trying to enter or leave buildings by the stairs or ladders. Although living in a city, he never really adapted himself to city life. From his point of view, life is about open space, quietness and social contact. Like the countryside. Through his paintings, Fidel grants the modern city dwellers a glimpse of themselves as being trapped in buildings. Partly influenced by Jesus Guerrero, Fidel is developing himself away from classical painting. This can be seen in the disproportional buildings, the surrealistic representations, the wrought perspective and his particular use of colour. Fidel says: ”In my paintings I take notice of the globalisation and cultural pluralism that disable us to feel our true identity. There is a growing conflict between our cultural identity on one hand and to open ourselves to other cultures on the other hand. This globalisation can be recognised in the massiveness of the populated areas with their cosmopolitan inhabitants. As if the world has become one great mega polis divided into heterogeneous, multicultural cities according to geometric patterns and of khaki colour. That way, cities resemble a sort of figurative art.“ CURRICULUM Geboren in 1961- Tovar Estado Mérida, Venezuela.
