THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Tovar, capitol of the region Tovar is situated at an altitude of 952 metres in the foothills of the Venezuelan Andes. Apart from being a regional capitol, Tovar also is an important

cultural centre. There we find a concentration of intellectual, literary and artistic talent. The most recent cultural outbreak is a group of highly talented artists united in ”El Grupo de los Pintores de Tovar“.

Painting is relatively new addition to Tovar’s artistic tradition of sculptors and musicians. The art of painting got started in 1969 with the establishing of ”El Taller Regional de Arte“ by Elbano Méndez Osuna. Apart from painting, Osuna, trained in Europe, started to teach arts in a European way. After a while, the pupils started to mix traditional European art with Venezuelan popular art.

The internationally famous ”Grupo de Tovar“ consists of Martín Morales, the brother Jesús en José Luis Guerrero, Iván Quintero, Nestor Alí Quiñones, Gerardo García, Fidel  Ramírez, Gilberto Pérez, Rafael Sánchez and Ruben Molina. All of them grew up and were artistically formed in or near Tovar. Osuna was a source of inspiration to most of them.

The artists of ”El Grupo de Tovar“ do not follow the same artistic leads. Each painter individually investigates the diversity of today’s artistic trends and expressions. They all have their own style and personal development.

The groups synergy has a stimulating effect upon creativity as can be judged by the many beautiful paintings being made in Tovar. In their paintings one can see the artistic tradition of the old world being combined with the rhythm, expression, bright and abundant colours and southern temperament of the new world.

Without exemption and regardless of tendencies or style, the work of these artists is in a class of its own regarding its original and authentic character. As a result of ongoing labour, confrontation and a never ending search, the ”Grupo de Tovar“ has become a national and international phenomena with its own and proper identity. I therefore consider it an honour to present you the tasty fruits of their labour.
